The mail lady dropped off a box this morning with something I had ordered. I put the empty box with packing by the door to take out next time I went out.

Tonight, Owl appears every bit as good as before the problem this week with vestibular disease. His high metabolism, large appetite, and energetic, even opportunistic self has, I am happy to report, returned to full flight!
It is 50 degrees here and while we're out enjoying the heat wave, the skies get darker and it starts sleeting or hailing or whatever the little pellets are! This is Nexus.
Ashley Roseberry, owner of Kurbis, sent these great shots from her place in Michigan. Talk about snow photos!
Thank you, Ashley! Opened my eyes this morning, saw sunshine in the window and couldn't get out of bed fast enough! Now I am waiting for the sun to move up over the evergreens and shine on all those iced up trees!!!
In the meantime, these are photos of my dogs that I took on our walk early evening yesterday. I DID figure out how to walk four dogs and carry my camera, too. And I felt safe carrying it with me on the icy road because I had on my Yaktrax. If not for the Yaktrax, I would not have been able to walk the road. Played around a bit and had some fun with effects, too. I haven't quite figured out how to tone down the reds. It shows up pretty dark and brilliant in snow. But then, they are brilliant. : ) I took some photos of Owl outside in the dark in the snow tonight. Then I cropped and edited the very last and best photo and this is what I came up with. I like it. But that's easy, because I like Owl! I am learning a lot about photography as I go along trying things out. It is fun to discover what works and what doesn't.
Stan Knoll and Oslo bested an entry of 59 dachshunds in Kirbyville, Texas. They are pictured with Absolute judges Ashley Dumas (left) and Sandi Myers. Super proud of Daddy and Oslo today! Called back second in a class of 15 Field Champion Dogs, Oslo won the class, then went on to win his 14th Absolute! Thanks to the judges and all the people who put on the trial. It was a great weekend! - Laura Knoll, MS In the class of 8 Field Champion Bitches, Oslo's daughter Seiko had the second best run in 1st series, was High after 2nd series, then finished in second place. Super Seiko was handled by her owner Laura Knoll.
Congratulations to Stan & Oslo, and Laura & Seiko!! Seiko was called back 2nd of 8 Field Champion Bitches and finished 4th. The field trials this weekend are hosted by the Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Club and being held at Windsong Acres in Kirbyville, Texas. Seiko was handled by her owner Laura Knoll who is responsible for this excellent photo of Seiko with her prize! Thank you, Laura, and Congratulations to both of you!
I came out of the kitchen this morning to see Owl watching KITTY TV - again. He is obsessed with the star of that show; never misses an episode if he can help it. Thinking that my view of the dog and cat 'lineup' was interesting, I went to get my camera. No concerns that Owl would move. He would be watching as long as Kiki was on screen!
In this weather, my dogs are getting more chew time than usual. After lunch, I gave them American-made rawhide to chew for 30 minutes so that I could get some stuff done. They started in on their rawhides, I watched 'em for a minute and decided to take photos. There went my 30 minutes!
The photos are interesting from a lighting perspective. All of them were taken in the same room. As I have said before, the coloration of red dogs is an evolving, revolving light show anyway, and different lighting makes the red tones even more interesting. The 1st and 3rd photos, the older Owl and Nexus, have more artificial lighting, because Owl claimed the couch and Nexus the dog bed which are further from the patio door. 2nd and 4th photos, Taya and Viljo, were taken on the carpet nearer the natural lighting from the glass door. Natural light is really beautiful, isn't it. Nope, I said 101!
I love to read. Over many years, though, I have collected far too many books. All the bookshelves are overflowing and there are stacks of books too many other places. On January 1, I began the slow and sometimes painful process of re-homing books. My original goal was to move 50% of them on to other people. I have revised that to 30%, at least until after I have been through all my books one time! Tonight I reached the milestone of 100 books that are no longer 'mine' and have gone OUT THE DOOR. I have many, many more books to sort through but it feels good to get this far down the path to a reasonable number. I posted this on Facebook for 'throwback Thursday.' Marta's second (and last) litter was by the Swedish import Hound's Kashmir who was out of venerable old hunting lines. Four males and three females were born in June of 2004. It was my O litter and I was working on coming up with O names. These were days before my photography went digital, so I had to wait to see photos. When I got this batch, I studied one particular photo of the four males together. The expression of one pup caught my eye. I said, hmmm, he looks like a wise little owl. Which is true to this day. I'm pretty sure you will know which one I am talking about. The last of the three M sisters v Dorndorf L, (Marta, Maya, and Minx), died last month. Minx' wonderful owner called me at the time and we talked for awhile. Today, Janice sent me this outstanding picture. It is unique for a photo and absolutely lovely! Taken by Janice on the next to last day of Minx' life, the picture strikes me as a work of art. I can hardly pull my eyes away from it. Patt, she was such a beauty... and such a gentle, loving girl. We were a great team together. Even though she's gone, I still feel her everywhere. I was doing some Christmas decorating Thursday, and when I had the cabinet open, pulling out the boxes... I really, really missed my little "Nosehead" inspecting everything. But she is running with her sisters now, running and laughing, her red hair flowing behind her. Run fast and free, sweet little Minx, until you can run to my arms once again. Janice, thank you. For everything. One way or another we will get you another girl.
I found this picture of your Mom and me...didn't know if you had it or not. We were at the Midwest Dachshund Club Specialty Show, Aug. 19, 1977. How well I remember that day, Bengel took a 5 pt. Major under judge Peter Monks. - Shirley Menard, ND Shirley, left, with her Dorndorf's Bengel Long who was Winners Dog, Best of Winners, and Best of Opposite Sex. My mother, Emma Nance, right, showed Bengel's mother CH Dorndorf's Andrea L to Best of Variety.
Thank you, Shirley, for the photo! I will try to find out who the guy in the middle is. hmmmm. Wonder who got into the last of the mashed sweet potatoes. Actually, I gave him the last of the mashed sweet potatoes! Owl had it smeared from one side of his nose to the other. He swallowed much of the 'evidence' while I was reaching for my camera!
I am enjoying and photographing this seemingly insignificant thing because Owl has only just gotten over three days with gastritis. In pain and not eating or drinking during that time, it is GOOD to see him hungry and active again! I don't take my dogs for photos with Santa but I can appreciate a good photo like that.
These are two dogs I once owned who both went to live with Patricia Thomas Massaro. On the left is ABS4 FC Judo v Dorndorf L. Judo was a good son of Ilsa. He probably started on rabbits better than any dog I have owned. But he did not voice on rabbits, only sometimes on deer, and eventually he went to a new home. I don't know that I would make the decision not to use him today but...live and keep learning. I know more about spurlaut these days than I did then. On the right is Walmar's Drucilla, sister of Group Winner Dark Prince and DCA Sweeps winner Druid Princess. I got Druci from Wally and Mary when she was middle age. I had her for a couple of years during which time she had one litter of one. Druci's only puppy became CH Walmar's Luke v Dorndorf L, father of Nadja, Nexus, Nick, and Nutmeg v Dorndorf L. Anyway, it was my contribution to throwback Thursday today on Facebook. Seemed like a good time to post this one! I'm not exactly sure but believe the photo was taken about 2001 so Judo would have been eight and Druci a few years older. I have been saying that Seiko is owned by Tina Knoll, which she is. Today, Tina's daughter Laura wrote to me, "Seiko is actually owned by me, too. I just needed some credit on my awesome little puppy."
Yes, you do, Laura! Pleeaase accept my apology. Pinch me, I must be dreaming. This has been quite a day. This evening, I got a private Facebook message asking if I am Emma Nance's daughter. "I am." Had a nice little chat - a reunion of sorts - with Shirley Menard [formerly Taylor] who obtained a male pup, Bengel, from my mother's B litter - in 1975! For various reasons, Shirley was out of dachshunds for many years. But, as she says it, she "is back!" Unknown to me, Shirley had posted this "throwback Thursday" photo on FB last week - on the exact same day that I had posted a photo of Bengel's half-sister Ericka! An amazing "coincidence?" Welcome back, Shirley! Pictures of the first two dogs I started out with... The female on the left is Clipper Adelaide and the male on the right is CH. Dorndorf's Bengel Long....He finished with three five point majors and took best puppy at the Minnesota Dachshund Club Specialty Show. He was a Ch. Han-Jo's Flaming Flare son. I had great times with these two, that I'll never forget! - Shirley Menard, MN Wow! More GOOD news this weekend. Olive's turn! "Olive did her part towards Dorndorf Weekend by earning QQ #14, 42 points, and two First places with her best Masters Preferred Standard and JWW runs ever! C@NGRATULATI@NS to Olive, John, and Diane!!!
I am guessing from the photo that it is not raining in southern California. But I have heard that it never rains in California. Seiko was called back High and Won the Field Champion Bitches class of 9 this morning.
Her father Oslo was called back second and Won the class of 11 Field Champion Dogs this afternoon. This was at the Mission City Dachshund Club field trial in Kirbyville, Texas. Seiko is owned by Tina Knoll, and Oslo by Stan Knoll who handled both dogs today. So in the run-offs for Absolute, guess who was Best Field Champion. Oslo's little girl Seiko! At this trial then, Seiko was braced with and defeated the top Field Champion of 2013 (Linda Snyder's Hopi), the top Field Champion of all time (Cheri Faust's Danika), and the top Longhaired & number 5 Field Champion of all time (Stan Knoll's Oslo)! Talk about an excellent day! Congratulations to the Knoll Family! I hope to get a photo or two to add to this post! At the AKC Agility Invitational in Orlando, Florida yesterday, 11.5 year old MACH4 Nutmeg v Dorndorf L CDX JE CG qualified in Time 2 Beat! Nutmeg is owned and handled by Maxine Brinker of Illinois.
Congratulations, you two!! This picture is to honor a dog that I did not own, and seldom saw, but who meant so much to me. This is DC Grampus von Harbor Park in the 1980s. I have some other photos but this one, I think, shows something of his enormous dignity and strength of DACHSHUND character.
Bred by Barbara Axel and owned by Joseph & Olga Heil, his sire was CAN CH Villanol's Redson von Piercen and his mother CH Camp Guthrie's Devil's Sprite CDX TT. Sprite was from a multi-champion litter sired by CH Han-Jo's Flaming Flare L. I'd received a letter from Karla Martin (now Deithorn) after one of the first Long Island field trials. I believe it was a match trial. Karla told me of a Champion standard long male with a lot of drive and a lot of voice. Highly intrigued, I spoke of this with a beagler friend, Preston Current while we were out running dogs one day. Preston said, I'll tell what I'd do. I'd go look at this dog and if you like him, breed your bitch to him. Keep the best female in the litter and breed her back to him. Preston knew I needed and wanted trail voice (spurlaut). It was an exceedingly rare commodity and finding it in an excellent dog that I could use had been very difficult. An understatement! Eventually, I did just what Preston advised. In 1984, I traveled from DCA in eastern Pennsylvania to see the dog on Long Island. In 1986, I had a litter by him. In 1990, I went to Hilton Head, South Carolina where he was then living and bred DC Grissel v Dorndorf L CDX TD VC to him. The subsequent litter produced FC Ilsa v Dorndorf L. Ilsa was Absolute Winner 15 times and the first dachshund to defeat 1000 Field Champions. More importantly, Ilsa produced Marta. Can we ever really repay the dogs and dog people who have paved our way? It is something of a rhetorical question. Outside of doing the very best we can do by what they have given us, the answer is no. Dennis Menendez gets another nice 6-pointer, but it took Odie's nose to track the deceased animal. - Angelo San Fratello, Falling Creek Outfitters "Demand is the death knell of friendship." This sentence in a book that I am reading catches my deeper attention. I want to think about that. With elbows on desk and head in hands, I focus in on the statement. Moments later, a couple of sharp, loud barks sound to the left of my chair. Viljo. While I am considering demand vs friendship, is my friend V "demanding" dinner? Bright smiling eyes and a thump of hairy tail say otherwise. Nope, this is just a friendly reminder!
This was Olive's first field trial on jack rabbits [hare], and Asti's first in many years. We went to give Bossa a chance to work jacks. Sadly, the Golden Gate Dachshund Club moved from the ampitheater setting of Lagoon Valley park to the flat lands of Centennial Park just east on the 80. Bossa didn't get a chance to see a jack before running her brace, and seemed more interested in the tilled earth than the hare that had just been flushed. I took her out again later, and held her in my arms as the gallery beat. Eventually she saw a jack rabbit crossing the field, and then another and another - she had learned to look in the direction of the "tally ho." The judges were profligate with the rabbits - only taking ones they saw. So when a rabbit broke in front of us and Bossa saw it run toward the road, I waited a while and then let her work the line. On that front, the weekend was a success. Thank you so much for the write-up and I like the picture a lot! Congratulations! I look forward to hearing about DCA next month.
